High and Dry

This is why I’m glad the roof leak didn’t land on the Swift set:

The Works of the Rev. Jonathan Swift, D.D.,
Dean of St. Patrick’s, Dublin

New York : William Durell and Co.

(1812-1813)

Nineteen volumes of a twenty-four-volume set,
part of the much larger British Classics series

These were purchased online June 3, 2015. I don’t remember what I paid for them, but I think it was around sixty or seventy dollars, maybe less, but certainly under one hundred. For now, they’re back on my mother’s desk, where this picture was taken more than eight years ago, and where this entry is being written.

The books are sturdier than they look. The bindings are intact, and the covers are securely attached. The pages are moderately foxed, and there are quite a few stains, mostly in the margins. The text is clear and perfectly legible. There are no pronounced odors; the old-paper scent is agreeable and mild.
