Monkey See, Monkey Do

In addition to running, I walk once or twice a day. Sometimes, even then, I find myself almost running. Either way, I’ve been aware for months how the barefoot-and-huarache experience has changed the way I feel and move. After years of being tortured by shoes, walking and running is a joyful, pain-free activity that’s made it harder for me to sit for more than fifteen or twenty minutes at a time. It isn’t restlessness. I’ve never felt more calm. The body simply craves movement, and it feels freer and better the more movement it’s allowed. And so I run through the house, dodging antiques and bookshelves, or down the driveway to bring in the recycling bins — up the steps and down, wishing there were more, kneeling at odd times, bending my feet this way and that. I should probably install bars to swing from. Who knows — maybe that day will come. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve made a monkey of myself.

  1. A friend of mine once likened my need to be in motion to that of a gerbil. I’m still spinning in my wheel not really getting anywhere, but the body seems to be on its way out.
